Welcome to SaaS thoughts

Whether you call it Software as a Service (SaaS), Managed Service Provider (MSP) or On-Demand Services, your organization uses the service running “in the cloud”. This blog will discuss these services, their benefits, drawbacks and operations. Are we biased? Yes. We believe that some services make sense for most organizations. Email security is one of those. However as Mark Twain said, “All generalizations are false, even this one.” Each Tuesday we will post information and questions about Software as a Service. Occasionally, we will have a "Guest Post" from either a consultant or vendor posting her/his thoughts on Managed Services generally as well as some degree of specificity based on her/his unique perspective. We encourage your insights, comments and feedback. Welcome.

Closing the Gap in Your Security System

Web security is the biggest “gap” in an organization’s security system. SaaS web security is the most cost-effective method to close that gap. Endpoint protection has limited effectiveness and does not stop user initiated problems. (UTP) and web security appliance each have unique financial and “green” drawbacks. SaaS web security offers excellent threat protection as well as URL filtering with complete reporting.

Inconvenient Truths about Web Security

Web security today should be at the forefront of every organization. Why? Here are just a few reasons.

  • 82% of all security problems in the typical computing environment comes from normally safe sites that have been “highjacked”. People inside the firewall get infected by Trojan software that they were tricked into installing.
  • If end-users are allowed to install any software they want, then the risk of security exploitation is high.
  • Fully patched and bug-free software has almost no effect on the risk from drive-by downloads.
  • Most malware and malicious hackers are criminally motivated and seek monetary gain.
  • End-user education has minimal effect on system security.
  • In spite of all the efforts of your security team, your firewall, your anti-malware software, and your IDS/IPS will fail.

These are especially true for organizations that do not have adequate IT staff to cover all their needs. That covers just about all organizations with less than 500 users. So, what can you do?

SaaS Web Security

In short, SaaS web security does at least as much as on-premises solutions without the on-premises hardware and/or software.

SaaS offers the unique combination of complete web protection with low cost. You can protect either just a set of desktops in a public WiFi system or your entire LAN from one easy to navigate browser window. You can even protect mobile users in your organization when they are away from your LAN. SaaS web security gives you the ability to block or warn users from accessing restricted URLs and applications. You can also protect against web threats and get full logging of all browser-based activity.

Endpoint Protection

If you haven’t already done so, get those desktops protected and patched. Desktops are the first and last line of defense. They protect from that corrupted USB drive or email attachment. However, this will not prevent users from going to dangerous or company prohibited URLs. Most organizations feel they have this step covered by desktop anti-virus software.

Unified Threat Protection Appliance

Just add web security to your firewall. Simple in concept but, subject to a single point of failure or attack. Yes, you can cluster your firewall appliances for redundancy at twice or more the cost of hardware, support and perhaps web security protection. You will probably need a more expensive UTP appliance to handle the additional processing throughput.

Web Security Appliance

You can isolate the browser traffic from your firewall by installing a separate web security perimeter appliance. It relieves the traffic from the firewall but adds an additional system that needs to be purchased, administered, powered and cooled.
